Race Rules
Check
out what's new this year...
Rules & Instructions
- Timing System Rules
- No escorts will be allowed
- Iron/Tin Teams must have a helper
- Participants are allowed to compete on more than one team in
DIFFERENT EVENTS ONLY. The same event time may not be used twice.
Infractions will result in disqualification for both teams.
- USCF licensed riders and top 25 Josh riders from previous year
will be lined up in front at the race start.
- Timing chips must be returned or a $30 fee will be changed.
Cyclists
- ANSI-approved protective helmet must be worn.
- No aero bars or disc wheels allowed.
- Roads are NOT closed to traffic. Stay to the right of
the yellow center line.
- Be sure to review and know the race route.
Follow the pace car.
- Show care when biking in a pack. Hold your spot. Don't weave
in and out.
- Number patches must be worn on upper center of back. Bike frame
number attaches to top and head tubes of bike.
- After 12 o'clock noon, police and volunteers will not be on
bike route directing traffic.
- Strap your pump on securely to avoid accidents.
- Bikes finish on the right side of the road; canoeists will wait
in a pen on the lakeside of road. IRON/TIN teams whose cyclists
are also padding, enter the left lane at the bike finish and bike
to the IRON/TIN pen area. Iron/Tin Teams must have a "HELPER"
to take the bike.
Canoeists/Kayakers
- KAYAKS MAY ONLY BE USED IN THE KAYAK CATEGORIES.
- BOATS SHOULD NOT BE LEFT AT THE BOAT RAMP OVERNIGHT.
- AUTOS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED AT THE BOAT RAMP AFTER 8:30 A.M.
Paddlers must thereafter park at Tanglewood South Lot and paddle
from Tanglewood Beach over to starting area.
- IRON/TIN TEAMS must have a "HELPER" to take the
boat from finish line to Tanglewood Beach. "HELPER" must
wear a life jacket. "HELPER" should park at Tanglewood
and walk to runners' pen at Camp Mah-Kee-Nac. Iron/Tin team cyclists
should know prior to start of race where their boat is located.
- Coast Guard approved over-the-shoulder life jackets must be
worn during the entire race.
- Bow paddler wears number on front of life jacket.
- Place team number decals on each side of the middle of the boat.
Duct tape works well.
- ACA regulations will be followed.
- Handoff: One paddler stays with the boat. The other person
must wait in the pen near the road until team's number is called
or team cyclist seen. Cyclist numbers will be radioed ahead as
best as possible. After taking handoff, paddler runs to boat and
both paddlers carry boat to water. No moving of boats allowed
until paddler arrives with wristband. Passageways between boats
must be kept open and clear.
- You are not disqualified if you tip over. Swim to shore, right
your boat and continue. A safety boat will assist you in an emergency.
Alert others boats if you are in trouble. Keep clear of boats
that have tipped over.
- NO beaching at Camp Mah-Kee-Nac unless paddler is also running,
"HELPER" must take boat. Paddlers remain in canoe and throw
wristband to runner on beach, then paddle to Tanglewood Beach
to exit from lake.
RUNNERS
- KEEP TO THE RIGHT ON THE ROADWAYS
- Race Marshals will be stationed at all intersections. Routes
will be marked with signs.
- Your bib must be clearly visible and the wristband must be worn
crossing the finish line.
- The tear-tag on your race bib is critical to accuracy at the
finish line-don't pin tear-tag.
- Please assist the Finish Line Marshals by making sure your tag
is easily accessible.
IRON AND TIN TEAM
Tin teams and Ironpeople need one Helper to
- Take your bike at the bike/boat transition area and return it to your car
- Take your canoe/kayak at the boat/run transition area and return it to your car
It works best if you
- leave your boat at the Stockbridge Bowl boat ramp early in the morning (there will be an area set aside for single canoes and iron kayaks)
- then the helper drives you to the start of the bike race
- the helper returns to Tanglewood and parks your car at the Tanglewood South parking lot on Hawthorne St.
- the helper walks to the Stockbridge Bowl boat ramp and waits for you to finish the bike leg
- once you have made the bike/boat transition, the helper takes the bike back to the car and then goes to Camp Mac-Kee-Nac for the boat/run transition.
- The helper then paddles the boat (on shoreline) to the Tanglewood beach where they take the boats out and go to the car
- Then up to Tanglewood to cheer you on as you finish your run!!!
You only need 1 helper at each transition (one person can do this-trust us, it works!).
If you do not have a Helper, we will have volunteers to take your boat at Camp Mahkeenac and bring it up to the field where you can pick it up after you finish. There are bike racks at the bike/boat transition area where you can leave (lock) your bike.
Bike Leg
Sticky number goes on the tube top. Tyvek number goes on the middle of your upper back. At the finish line, bike with caution down the left side of the dirt access road to the transition area which is about 30 yards down on the left. You should know before the bike start where your canoe/kayak is located.
Canoe Leg
Sticky number goes on both sides of the middle of the canoe. Tyvek number goes on the front of the life jacket (bow paddlers life jacket). Helper may not assist you in carrying the boat to the water. At the end of the canoe/kayak leg you may beach briefly at Camp Mah-Kee-Nac on the right side of the beach for the runner to get out and for Ironpeople to hand off the canoe/kayak to your helper. Helper must wear a life jacket while paddling over to the Tanglewood Beach take-out area.
If you use a camelback, please put number on top so we can see it.
